Florida Offshore Fishing Guide

Offshore is a different game. The moment you clear the inlet and the water turns from green to cobalt, Florida hands you two completely separate fisheries — and which one you get depends entirely on which coast you launch from.

On the Atlantic side, the Gulf Stream sweeps in close to the beach, putting sailfish, mahi-mahi, wahoo and tuna within a short run. On the Gulf of Mexico side, a wide, shallow shelf means longer runs — but it’s some of the best bottom fishing on earth for red snapper, grouper and amberjack. Here’s how to read both.

🌊 The Atlantic & the Gulf Stream — East Coast + the Keys

Florida’s east coast is blessed with blue water you can reach fast. Off Palm Beach and Miami the Gulf Stream runs within a mile or two of the beach, so you can be trolling 600 feet of cobalt water minutes after clearing the inlet. This is pelagic country.

  • Sailfish Alley (Stuart → Palm Beach) — the winter sailfish run (Nov–Mar) is world-famous; cold fronts push bait and sails south along the edge.
  • Mahi-mahi (dolphin) — spring and summer bring schoolies and gaffers along weed lines and under frigate birds.
  • Wahoo, blackfin & yellowfin tuna, kingfish, cobia — work the temperature breaks and color changes; high-speed troll for wahoo, kites for sails.
  • Reef bottom — mutton, mangrove and yellowtail snapper, plus grouper and amberjack on the patch reefs and wrecks inside the Stream.
  • The Keys & Florida Straits — the southern tip pushes into true big-game, near-Caribbean water: white and blue marlin, big tuna, sailfish, and the legendary Marathon Hump for blackfin and amberjack.

⚓ The Gulf of Mexico — West Coast

The Gulf side trades close-in blue water for a vast, structure-rich continental shelf. The runs are longer — but few places anywhere bottom-fish like the eastern Gulf.

  • Red snapper — the marquee fish, and tightly regulated; the Gulf season is the busiest weekend of the offshore year.
  • Gag & red grouper, amberjack, mangrove snapper — the bread-and-butter of Gulf reefs, ledges and wrecks.
  • Kingfish, cobia, blackfin tuna — nearshore in spring and fall; cobia migrate the beaches sight-castable in spring.
  • The Panhandle edge — Destin (the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village”) and Pensacola reach deep water and the DeSoto Canyon faster than anywhere on the west coast.
  • Tampa Bay → Sarasota — long runs (sometimes 30–60+ miles) to the prime grouper and snapper grounds, but the payoff is real.

  • Grouper & amberjack — heavy tackle and strong backs for the reefs and wrecks.
  • Kingfish (king mackerel) — blistering runs on slow-trolled live bait nearshore.

🗓️ When to Go (Offshore Seasons)

  • Winter (Nov–Mar) — Atlantic sailfish peak; wahoo and blackfin on the edge; Gulf grouper.
  • Spring (Mar–May) — cobia migrate the Gulf beaches; kingfish runs; the first mahi show on the Atlantic.
  • Summer (Jun–Aug) — mahi prime along Atlantic weed lines; the Gulf red snapper season; calm-morning windows before the storms.
  • Fall (Sep–Nov) — the fall kingfish run; wahoo pick up; bait migrations fire up the whole water column.

✅ Know Before You Go — Offshore Is Serious

  • Respect the water. Offshore is weather- and sea-state-driven, not tide-driven. Watch the wind and swell forecast and pick your window — a calm-looking inlet can be brutal three miles out.
  • Gear up for safety. A seaworthy boat, working VHF, EPIRB or PLB, life jackets, flares, ample fuel with reserve, and a float plan filed with someone ashore. Out here, self-rescue is the plan.
  • Federal regs apply offshore. Many offshore species (red snapper, grouper, amberjack, several pelagics) are FEDERALLY managed — seasons and limits are set by NOAA and the Gulf/South Atlantic councils and change yearly. Always verify current FWC and federal regulations before you keep a fish.
  • Consider a charter first. Offshore has a real learning curve. A day with a good captain is the fastest, safest way to learn the runs, the rigging and the grounds.
