Gulf gag grouper closes at 12:01 a.m. on October 1 and stays closed for the rest of 2026. The season only reopened September 1, after nearly a year shut — so if you want a gag in the box this year, the rest of September is it. And this year, unlike most, state and federal waters are on the same schedule.
Here are the confirmed dates, the limits, the free permit most people forget, and a plan for the last weeks of the season.
Gag Grouper Season 2026: The Dates
Gulf state waters are open September 1–30, 2026, closing at 12:01 a.m. on October 1. FWC set these dates by executive order at its August meeting, deliberately matching NOAA’s federal season so anglers aren’t tracking two different calendars.

The Atlantic is closed. The 2026 Atlantic gag season ran from May 1 and was ended early by executive order on August 2. East-coast gag harvest is done for the year — plan those trips for spring 2027.
Corrected August 16, 2026: an earlier version of this guide listed Gulf state waters as closing September 14, with federal waters running to October 1. FWC’s August executive order aligned state waters with the federal season, so both now run September 1–30. You no longer need to be beyond nine miles to keep a gag in late September.
Size and Bag Limits

That last one catches people out every single opener. The State Reef Fish Survey designation is free, takes about two minutes, and is not the same thing as your saltwater fishing licence. Every angler harvesting reef fish from a private boat in Gulf waters needs it. Add it when you renew, or add it today.
Where to Catch September Gag
Early-season gag sit shallower than most people expect. Start on nearshore ledges, hard bottom and artificial reefs in 40–90 feet, then work deeper structure past 100 feet for the better fish as the month goes on.
What you’re looking for is ambush structure with current pushing bait across it — live bottom, rock piles, wrecks, reef edges. Idle and read your bottom machine before you drop. One productive ledge will out-produce a day of hopping between marks.
Tackle and Technique
Gag eat and immediately bolt for the hole. The entire game is stopping them in the first three seconds, which is a tackle problem before it’s a skill problem:
- Heavy-power rod under 7 feet, and a sealed high-capacity reel with the drag locked down.
- 50–80 lb braid to a heavy fluorocarbon leader — you need to turn the fish’s head immediately.
- A knocker or fish-finder rig with enough lead to hold bottom, and a non-offset circle hook in 5/0–8/0.
- Baits: live pinfish and grunts, big threadfins or sardines, or cut squid and bonito strips. Live bait draws the bigger gags.

Last Call: Three Gulf Targets, One Trip
Gag isn’t the only Gulf bottom fish open right now. Greater amberjack reopened in state waters on September 1 and runs through October 13, closing at 12:01 a.m. on October 14, and Gulf red snapper is on its fall schedule. Gag is the first of the three to close — so the rest of September is the last stretch this year when all three are legal on the same trip, over the same structure.
Charter captains know that too, and the last September weekends go first. If you want a guided gag trip, book it now rather than the week before.

Twenty-four inches, two per person inside the four-grouper aggregate, and you need the free State Reef Fish Survey designation before you leave the dock. Amberjack and red snapper keep going after that — but if gag is on your list, the rest of September is it.
