The Nature Coast is what Florida used to be. From Cedar Key down through Crystal River and Homosassa, the Big Bend’s shoreline is a maze of shallow grass flats, oyster bars, spring-fed rivers and undeveloped islands β no high-rises, no crowds, just fish.
This skinny, clear water is a redfish and trout factory, and in summer the Homosassa flats host some of the most famous fly-rod tarpon fishing on earth. It’s shallow, it’s tide-driven, and it rewards anglers who slow down and read the water.
π£ Top Species to Target
Old-Florida flats fishing at its finest:
- Redfish β the bread and butter β tailing on the flats and crawling the oyster bars on low water. Redfish how-to β
- Spotted Seatrout β everywhere over the grass; winter pushes gators into the rivers and creeks. Trout guide β
- Tarpon β Homosassa’s legendary fly tarpon arrive in late spring β a true bucket-list fishery. Tarpon how-to β
- Spanish Mackerel & Bluefish β blitz the flats and channels in the warm months β fast action on the troll or cast.
- Cobia β spring brings them over the rocks and to channel markers β keep a pitch rod ready.
- Black Drum & Sheepshead β around the oyster bars and creek mouths, especially in the cooler months.
π Where to Fish
- Cedar Key β grass flats, oyster bars and backwater creeks in every direction β a redfish and trout playground.
- Steinhatchee β famous for summer scallops and steady reds and trout year-round.
- Homosassa β the historic fly-tarpon grounds, plus winter trout in the warm spring runs.
- Crystal River β spring-fed and clear β manatees, reds and trout in a postcard setting.
- Suwannee River mouth β tannic water meets the flats β wild, remote, and loaded with fish.
ποΈ When to Go
- Summer (JunβAug) β tarpon at Homosassa, Spanish mackerel on the flats, and scallop season β the Nature Coast’s marquee months.
- Fall (SepβNov) β redfish school up hard on the flats and bars β arguably the best reds of the year.
- Winter (DecβFeb) β trout and reds pile into the spring-fed rivers for warmth β a reliable cold-weather bite.
- Spring (MarβMay) β cobia show, trout spread back onto the grass, and the first tarpon arrive.

β Know Before You Go
- It’s shallow β really shallow. The Big Bend has big tide swings for Florida; a low tide can leave you high and dry. Watch the live tide chart above and your track.
- Mind the oyster bars. They’ll eat a lower unit fast β idle, pole, or trolling-motor across the skinny stuff.
- Scallop season has rules. Summer bay-scalloping is a blast but has seasons and zones β check the current FWC regulations.
- It’s remote. Services are limited between towns β top off fuel, carry water, and tell someone your plan.
