June is when Florida fishing hits its stride. Some people leave when the summer heat rolls in. We don’t. This is when the tarpon are on the beaches. When redfish are chasing bait up into the shallows. When the Gulf snapper season is wide open and the fish are stacked on the reefs. Yes, it’s hot. Fish early. Here’s what’s biting and how to fish it.

Tarpon: Florida’s Summer Superstar
June and July are the peak of tarpon migration on the Gulf Coast — the single best two-month window to target the Silver King in the United States. These are 80–150 pound fish. They are strictly catch-and-release (a tarpon tag is required to retain one, and only if pursuing a world record).
Where to Find Them
- Boca Grande Pass — the most famous tarpon hole in the world. On tide changes, hundreds of fish stack the mouth of the pass.
- Tampa Bay Passes — Egmont Key, Bunces Pass, Johns Pass, Skyway Bridge. Fish live crabs or threadfin on tide transitions.
- Gulf Beaches — Sarasota to Naples: tarpon roll within casting range of the sand in June and July. Wade-fishable from the beach or launch a kayak and work parallel to shore.
- Florida Keys Flats — world-class sight-fishing tarpon on fly or light tackle. June is the Keys’ prime month.
How to Fish Them
- Live blue crabs or pass crabs free-lined in the pass on an incoming tide — the #1 tarpon bait on the Gulf Coast
- Live threadfin herring fished under a balloon (adjustable depth)
- Large paddle tails (DOA Bait Buster, big swimbaits) for visual fish on calm days
- Fly: EP Baitfish patterns, Cockroach fly in black/purple or chartreuse/white

Redfish: Summer Backcountry Hunting
Redfish spend the summer in the backcountry — mangrove-edged cuts, oyster bar points, shallow grass flats — gorging on crabs, shrimp, and baitfish. They’re aggressive, visual targets and some of the most fun fish you’ll catch on light tackle.
High tide: Fish are under the mangroves and on the shallow flats, sometimes tailing in inches of water. Stealth matters — pole or push your boat; no motor.
Low tide: Fish retreat to channel edges, oyster bar points, and deep-grass holes.
Best Techniques
- Topwater at dawn: Walk a Heddon Super Spook along a mangrove edge at first light — one of the most satisfying strikes in fishing
- Gold spoon: Weedless, works everywhere, always in the box
- Soft plastic under mangroves: Z-Man DieZel MinnowZ on a 1/4 oz jighead, slow-rolled through the shadow
- Popping cork rig: Cajun Thunder cork with live or artificial shrimp
Regulations: Slot 18–27 inches total length. Bag limit: 1 fish per person per day.
Spotted Seatrout: Fish Early or Don’t Fish
Seatrout are extremely active in June, but the summer bite is an early-morning proposition. By 9–10am the heat pushes them off the shallow flats into deep grass holes and dock shadows. Be positioned at first light.
FWC’s new 2026 regional regulation system changed the bag limits across the state — most Gulf Coast anglers are at 3 fish per day (+ 1 over-slot per vessel), but Indian River Lagoon is now at 2 fish with a seasonal closure. Know your region before you fish.
Best summer technique: MirrOlure MirrOdine walked on a calm flat at dawn. Popping cork + Z-Man in deeper water after the surface bite dies.

Red Snapper: The Offshore Summer Prize
The 2026 Gulf private recreational red snapper season is open right now, through July 31 — the longest summer window in Florida’s history. Two fish per person, 16-inch minimum. Head to 80–120 feet on any offshore reef structure in the Panhandle or Tampa west coast, drop cut squid on a circle hook rig, and limit out.

Snook: Catch-and-Release Only Right Now
Snook season is closed on both coasts through summer (Gulf: May 1–Aug 31; Atlantic: June 1–Aug 31). This is peak spawning season. The fish stacked in the passes and along the beaches right now are exactly the population that sustains the fishery. You can still fish them — catch-and-release only. Handle fish quickly, keep them in the water for photos, and release in the current.

Florida Summer Fishing Timing Rules
Go early. The best inshore bite is the first two hours after sunrise. By 10am water temps on shallow flats hit the mid-80s and activity drops sharply.
Fish the tide, not the clock. A moving tide at 2pm can be better than slack water at 6am. Plan around tidal movement, not sunrise.
Find shade and structure. Heat pushes fish to dock shadows, mangrove overhangs, and deep structure. Ambush points near shade are far more productive than open-water flat fishing in summer.
Evening windows. The last 90 minutes before dark produces well for snook, reds, and trout on topwater. Worth braving the afternoon heat for that second shot at a surface bite.

Bottom Line
Florida in June and July is one of the most diverse fishing periods of the year. Offshore: red snapper season is wide open. Nearshore: tarpon are peaking. In the backcountry: redfish are aggressive and shallow. Go early, fish the tide, and target what’s in season. You’ll find fish.
