Federal For-Hire / Charter Boats (Gulf)
Boats with a federal for-hire reef fish permit are open June 1 – October 25, 2026 (147 days).
Atlantic Red Snapper
The 2026 Atlantic window ran May 22 – June 20 plus select October weekends. The Atlantic summer window is now closed. Atlantic anglers: target the fall weekend sessions beginning in October.

Where to Catch Red Snapper in Florida
Panhandle — The Snapper Capital
The Florida Panhandle (Pensacola, Destin, Panama City, Apalachicola) is the undisputed red snapper epicenter of the Gulf Coast. The offshore ledge-and-reef system here is world-class — artificial reefs from the Escambia County Reef Program alone cover hundreds of square miles. Fish at 80–120 feet on any nearshore reef structure and you’ll have red snapper. The Panhandle headboat and charter fleet runs daily trips to these reefs from May through October.
Tampa Bay / West Coast Offshore
Head 40–70 miles west of Tampa Bay into the Gulf and you’ll find excellent summer snapper on natural and artificial ledge systems. The water clarity improves significantly from June onward. Hubbard’s Marina out of John’s Pass (Madeira Beach) runs party boat trips to Gulf reef systems — one of the best options if you don’t have your own offshore access.
Florida Keys / Dry Tortugas
The Gulf side of the Florida Keys and the Tortugas grounds hold quality red snapper populations on deep ledges and structure. The Atlantic summer window is closed, but the Gulf-side fall season is open now. How to Fish for Red Snapper
Red snapper are bottom-oriented structure fish. You’re fishing down, not casting — they live on reefs, ledges, wrecks, and hard bottom at 60–200 feet.
The Standard Bottom Rig
- 60–100 lb fluorocarbon leader (18–24 inches)
- Sliding egg sinker — 3–8 oz, enough to reach bottom fast in current
- Dropper loop 12 inches above sinker
- 2/0–4/0 circle hook — we use Owner Mutu Circle Hooks
Best baits:
- Cut squid — the #1 red snapper bait in Florida. Simple, cheap, always available.
- Cut cigar minnow — excellent, especially butterflied on the hook
- Fresh sardines / pilchards — live or dead
- Cut pinfish — especially effective on larger fish
Vertical Jigging
When fish are suspended off bottom, slow-pitch vertical jigging with metal jigs (60–150g) is effective and more fun than bait fishing. Drop to bottom, crank up 5–10 feet, and work a 2–3 foot lift-and-fall cadence. You’ll also pick up amberjack, grouper, and almaco jack on the same presentation.

Bottom line on gear: Heavy braid handles current and gets weight to the bottom fast. The fluorocarbon leader is invisible in clear offshore water. Circle hooks reduce deep hooksets and make releasing undersized fish easier on both parties.
