About Florida’s Best Fishing

This site exists because Florida fishing information is either scattered across a dozen forums, locked behind a membership, or written by someone who has never stood in the water they are describing.

Everything here is written by one person, under the name Captain. That is a pen name, not a credential — I am not a USCG-licensed charter captain, and I am not going to pretend otherwise on a site that publishes fishing regulations. I am a Florida angler who got tired of not being able to find a straight answer, and started writing the resource I wanted.

Writing under a pen name is a privacy choice. It is not a licence to be vague about where information comes from, which is why How We Research lays out exactly what is first-hand, what is verified against primary sources, and what is neither.

• Species guides. Two dozen of them, covering where a fish lives, when it feeds, what tackle actually turns it, and the current size and bag limits. These are the deepest thing here.
• Regulations. Size limits, bag limits and season dates, checked against FWC and stamped with the date they were checked. The season and limit checker answers the question in about four seconds.
• Free tools. Live NOAA tides, solunar feeding windows, lure and tackle matching. No login, no paywall, no email required. Other sites charge a membership for exactly this.
• Regional detail. Eleven region pages, because what works in Mosquito Lagoon will get you nothing in Boca Grande.

It is not a charter directory with first-hand reviews of every operator. It is not a gear site that has personally fished every rod on the page. And the fishing reports are not weekly — they go up when there is something real to report, which is less often than a publishing schedule would like.

Saying so costs nothing. Claiming otherwise would cost the only thing a site like this has.

The practical effect you should watch for: affiliate income creates pressure to recommend something rather than tell you that you do not need to buy anything. Where the honest answer is “the rod you already own is fine,” that is what the guide says.

Regulations change, sometimes mid-season, and this site will be wrong occasionally. If you find something incorrect — especially a size limit, a bag limit or a season date — tell me and it gets fixed and re-dated the same week. Nothing here is so precious that it is worth leaving wrong.
